I can't believe that your employers are so reluctant to protect their archives; haven't they heard of risk management?

Maybe you should create a business case for 'digitisation as a valuable tool' and e-mail that onto your 'head honchos'!!! :-)

I had a similar conversation with my friend recently about the 'communal aspect' of TV watching. He was angry that the BBC had changed the time of Doctor Who from 7pm to 6.40pm because he wouldn't be home from work in time to watch it. I suggested that he just watch it on iPlayer when he got home, to which he shouted "it's just not the same"! :-)

This is really interesting and reminds me of an article I read recently on TimesOnline about the future of the internet:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article3689881.ece

It discusses 'Grid Technology' and touches on 'Cloud Computing'; which will enable us to store all of our work / information on the internet, meaning that we can access it anywhere, anytime!

Like you, I look forward to such developments as I'm forever leaving my memory stick at home!

Even though you're located in an "abandoned basement" you should feel more like a librarian than ever before! Think about it, you're responsible for preserving, cataloguing and providing access to the myriad information your company seems to acquire / dump; and it's your role to promote an understanding of the value of information and the role it plays in the smooth running of the company.

Don't forget, "Librarians are Heroes Everyday"! The unfortunate thing being, that like most superheroes and even action heroes, much of our hard work goes by unnoticed!

I always felt a bit sorry for John McClane in the Die Hard movies - he was never given proper credit for saving New York from terrorists...the public only ever heard about him when he did something wrong...
